How to manually assign an action to a user after an Assignment Error?

What is the best way to handle an assignment error in WorkflowGen? I would like for the process to simply pause, and let the WorkflowGen admin assign the action manually after the assignment error. Would the same process from this tutorial work in this situation or only for system actions? Implementing corrective "debug" actions within your workflow

Edit: The tutorial above does not seem a suitable solution, since participants cannot be changed for an active process. Even after pausing the process by going to a manual action, there is seemingly nothing the administrator can do to change the assignment when the process loops back to the action that caused the assignment error.
